Robert Boisseau Pamplin graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute at Blacksburg, Va. in 1933, and did graduate work at Northwestern University, Evanson, Ill. He was recognized and honored as an outstanding alumnus by both institutions: in 1969 the building in which the College of Business is housed at Virginia Polytechnic Institute was named Pamplin Hall in recognition of Robert Boisseau Pamplin's achievements in the business world, one who had brought "prestige to the University through his national prominence as a business leader"; and in 1966 he received Northwestern University's Merit Award. Also, Lewis and Clark College, of Portland Oregon, on whose Board of Trustees he served as chairman 1963-68 and 1977-1979, honored Robert Boisseau Pamplin by naming their indoor athletic facility the Pamplin Sports Center.

Robert Boisseau Pamplin joined the Georgia-Pacific Corporation in 1934 and worked continuously for this company until his retirement in November 1976, a period of forty-two years. Georgia-Pacific was a very small wholesale lumber company when he joined it; at his retirement sales had reached a figure in the billions of dollars. He successively worked as Accountant, Secretary and Treasurer, Financial Vice President, up through several executive levels until he was elected President in 1957 and Chairman of the Board in 1968.

In addition to his Georgia-Pacific affiliation, Robert Boisseau Pamplin served over the years on the boards of several business and financial institutions. After his retirement, he became chairman of the family-owned R. B. Pamplin Corporation of Portland Oregon. (See Appendix B. page 339, for an extended account of Robert Boisseau Pamplin's activities and honors.)
